Reflection paper
As a student of second language education, this class has proved to be very helpful
for the area of teaching that I plan to be doing in the future. The topics this
class covered brought me a better understanding of the different strategies and
approach for teaching students a second language, including actual observations
of classes and methods in action.
At the beginning of the class I was not sure what topics would be covered.
Linguistics 480 was a very informative and interesting class. This class
presented a lot of material and discussed topics about education and how to use
these methods. I also learned how to create lessons plans based on the teaching
methods introduced to me in this class. Through the course materials, including
our class textbook, videos, and web sites, I learned how to find ideas to help
create a lesson plan, and how to put the teaching techniques into
action.
I realized the potential of integrating technology into a curriculum. Technology
can help L2 students how to read, listen, speak, write, and visually represent
the target language. I have learned how to use many free online tools that are
available to teachers on sites such as Google, ITunes, YouTube, and many others.
Integrating technology as an educational tool can help student take on a new
perspective to learning, and provide exceptional free online
resources.
I also learned that, as a teacher, we need to involve student’s input of what they
really like to do, and find their interests and how these can be integrated into
the classroom. Through these strategies a teacher can develop self- motivation
in the students and an impetus for the students to play a big part in the
learning process.
Some of the topics that this class provided were ways to foster cooperative learning
that creates greater interaction between the students and opens a path for
students to benefit and learn from each other’s strengths and abilities.
Cooperative learning can help a student to increase collaboration with others
during a group activity, and encourages students to practice together, share
ideas, and help each other.
Over the course of this semester, I have acquired many new ideas on how to become a
better teacher. Before I was in this class, I had some ideas about education
techniques from other classes, but I didn’t really have a sense of how to put
these ideas into practice in the classroom. However, during this semester, I
found myself thinking about my own educational philosophy, and the most
effective ways to approach teaching students who are learning a second language.
Also, I learned that each student works at a different pace, and that we have to
get to know our students in order to provide successful teaching in the
classroom. I enjoyed seeing my progress with learning how to teach. I think this
class was useful for my education degree. The various educational contexts in
this course has been well discussed such as development lesson plans,
self-evaluation, motivation, approaches, reinforcement, incorporating technology
education.
In the future, I expect to utilize much of the knowledge I have acquired from this
class. I feel that all the things I learned will be very helpful to me,
regardless what I am trying to accomplish. I feel that I gained a lot of
knowledge about teaching techniques and how to put them to use in the
classroom. I have truly learned from, and enjoyed this class, and know
what I have learned will be extremely beneficial in my professional career.
I think proper preparation is fundamental to effective teaching. The activity where
I created a lesson plan was the most useful because it will help me with effective
preparation. This class provided to me a variety of tools that helped me to be a
more confident and autonomous learner who understands the purpose of
their learning, and also that will help me to be a more effective and self-aware teacher.
This course also allowed me to understand methodologies in education,
especially how to approach students and effectively move their interests into a
motivational tool for learning the subject matter.
